The City of Williams Lake saw costs for policing go up $300,000 needing to be paid in the coming years.
At last night’s meeting, Council said they had budgeted for $400,000, but due to attributed factors such as overtime, it’s bringing that cost to $700,000.
Mayor Surinderpal Rathor says they have time to figure out how to cover those costs.
“City Council has to be wise enough to hold the spending.” says Rathor.
“If every council member starts raising their hand on every item to hand out a giveaway, then we have no other choice but to raise the taxes.”
That money would need to be paid by 2026, which Rathor says he’s glad it’s further down the road.
He added that if there were to be a tax increase, it would sit around the 4 percent range, but notes the confidence he has that the City will get that paid.
Rathor says an area where they can cut costs could be Council’s travel expenses.
He mentioned during the meeting that RCMP costs is one of the City’s biggest bills.
