Emergency crews attend bear spray incident at Williams Lake school

Williams Lake RCMP responded to a report at Columneetza Junior Secondary School regarding a student spraying another with bear spray.

At 10:16 this morning, crews arrived to the scene where the bear spray got into the vents of the school, resulting in several people suffering minor irritation to the eyes, prompting a school evacuation.

Police said the suspect youth fled the area and out of an abundance of caution, the nearby elementary school was placed on a hold and secure.

The youth has been found and apprehended, with the hold and secure being lifted.

Inspector Rob Lake said “We believe this to be a targeted incident and there is no further risk to the public.”

Emergency Health Services attended to provide medical treatment, with the Williams Lake Fire Department helping vent the school.

No other injuries were reported, and the investigation is ongoing.
