The Williams Lake Fire Department is holding their third Rooftop Campout for Muscular Dystrophy today.
Muscular dystrophy is a group of neuromuscular disorders which progressively weakens voluntary muscles that could affect the ability to walk, speak, and breathe.
Firefighter and Regional Advisor for the Cariboo for Muscular Dystrophy Canada, Dereck Sulentich says the intent is to mimic the struggles that people with neuromuscular disorders face.
“By camping out in the cold, this sort of gives a little idea with people affected with neuromuscular disorders go through.”
“Just the numbing of your muscles and not being able to feel them, and that’s sort of what our clients go through. Losing the ability with muscles.”
Sulentich says this is also to create awareness and generate funds through the event to provide services and equipment to families dealing with the disorders, and for research to find a cure.
Anyone interested in supporting can do so by donating at the boot at Canadian Tire, the Fire Hall, or through the Muscular Dystrophy Canada website.
Sulentich noted that the generosity and support from different businesses has been overwhelming up to this point.
He says they will be heading to the top of Canadian Tire tonight between 5:00pm and 6:00pm and will remain on the roof until Sunday (February 25th) afternoon at around 2:00pm.
