Thompson Rivers University in Williams Lake, in partnership with the Museum of the Cariboo Chilcotin, invite everyone to view a nationally recognized Indigenous art exhibit.
Developed by the Canadian Museum for Human Rights the “Witness Blanket” recognizes the dark and difficult legacy of residential schools in our country.
Manager of Administration and Operations at TRU, Pat Biblow, said since it opened at the end of October there has been a lot of interest in residents coming to the campus to view it.
“And schools are starting to bring their students in, Elementary as well as High Schools so that’s always encouraging as well.”
Biblow noted that there is an opening event for the Witness Blanket exhibit taking place this Monday (November 27)
“It will start at 1 o’clock and we welcome anyone who’d like to come out and view it. There will be some light refreshments and some guest speakers. We’ll have Phyllis Webstad who was very instrumental in bringing this blanket to our community so she’ll be here to say a few words.”
The cedar framed artwork is made up of more than 800 reclaimed items from 77 sites across Canada, including churches and cultural organizations.
The Witness Blanket will be on display at Thompson Rivers University Williams Lake Campus until January 8, 2024.
