A though-provoking travelling Indigenous exhibit can now be viewed at the Thompson Rivers University campus in Williams Lake.
Originally slated to open back on August 20th, it had to be postponed due to wildfires in the community of Fort Smith in Northwest Territories where it was to be delivered from.
Developed by the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and Indigenous artist Carey Newman, the “Witness Blanket” recognizes the dark and difficult legacy of residential schools in our country.
“It was my way of using art to talk about the truth of residential school history in Canada. It was inspired by my father and his experience,” Newman said.
The cedar framed artwork is made up of more than 800 reclaimed items from 77 sites across Canada, including churches and cultural organizations.
The Witness Blanket will be on display at the TRU Williams Lake Campus until Monday January 8th 2024 :
8:30 am to 8 pm Monday to Thursday
8:30 am to 4:30 pm Fridays
9:00 am to 5:30 pm Saturdays
Noon to 5:30 pm Sundays
