With Canada Day approaching, the Cariboo Fire Centre is looking to keep wildfires down.
Anyone heading out camping, or just celebrating the holiday, the Fire Centre wants to put out a reminder that there is still the category 2 fire prohibition.
“We do want people to go out and enjoy the outdoors this long weekend, but be especially careful when you’re recreating in the outdoors.” says Madison Dahl, Fire Information Officer.
“We are not allowed to have fireworks, sky lanterns, burn barrels or burn cages, no tiki torches, and that sort of thing throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre.”
Dahl added that Campfires are still allowed, as long as they don’t exceed half a metre wide by half a metre high, with a number of precautions such as easy access to a shovel, 8 litres of water, and a fuel break around the fire.
On top of fire safety, she notes that the region could see some high winds this weekend, especially Saturday.
Dahl says winds could reach 50-60 kilometres per hour, which is important to note when extinguishing campfires, and making sure the ashes are cool to the touch.
Lastly she asks that anyone that comes across a wildfire, unattended campfire, or a burning violation, to call 1-800-663-5555.
