Central Cariboo Search and Rescue recently completed a large project to help in their search for lost individuals in the back forty.
Back in October, they installed a radio repeater on top of the Williams Lake Powder Kings Snowmobile Club cabin onYanks Peak.
Public Relations Coordinator and SARS member, Deborah Bortolussi said this piece of equipment allows for much-needed radio communications in what used to be a difficult reception area.
“We never had adequate radio coverage. We would always have to put up portable repeaters which would take the time needed on calls in order so we could have adequate communication.”
Bortolussi noted that because Yanks Peak is such a hub for outdoor adventures like snowmobiling in the winter, quadding and hiking in the summer, we do a lot of calls out there and when it comes to communications, that’s our safety for whomever we’re there to help as well as for SARS.
“Our Communications team with help from Kevin, and many CCSAR members, spent countless hours ensuring the equipment was ready, then spent two days initialing it. We thank the Williams Lake Powder Kings for the use of their cabin and Frontline Helicopters for their assistance.”
Bortolussi reminds anyone planning to head out to the backcountry to be sure to bring along some kind of communication device, a way to help yourself in case of an emergency like a shovel, avalanche beacon, a first aid kit, food, blankets, and something to start a fire with.
