With the start of the Fall season just around the corner, people throughout the Cariboo will be hiking in the backcountry to see it in all of its splendor.
Debra Bortolussi member and Public Relations Coordinator with Central Cariboo Search and Rescue said it’s a good idea for people first to go online to BC Adventure Smart.
Bortolussi noted that’s where they’ll find information on what they should know before they go like taking along the essentials and trip planning.
“Ensure that you are telling someone you trust where you are going, what you’re going to be doing, and when to expect you back. And then within that plan when to call for Search and Rescue a call for help if you happen not to return on time.”
Bortolussi said Search and Rescue also get quite a few calls each year for lost hunters.
“It’s very easy to become complacent, you go hunting the same area, or you grew up in the Cariboo, you’re normally quite comfortable but it is easy to get turned around out in the forest. It’s easy to lose sight of where your dark was, what of time of day it is and now it’s dark.”
Bortolussi added that it’s always good for novice hunters to go with someone experienced, someone who knows the area, who’s hunted what you’re looking for, someone who is going to be able to guide you. And also there’s safety in numbers.
