BCGEU, Private Liquor Store Association getting ready for legal cannabis

The BCGEU and Private Liquor Store Association of BC announced a partnership on recreational marijuana Wednesday.

BCGEU President Stephanie Smith says the so called, “Responsible Marijuana Retail Alliance” is preparing for promised legalization from Ottawa.

“Here in BC it should be sold and distributed through our current liquor store system. It’s about socially responsible sales, these are age controlled environments are we have a proven track record.”

Smith added she envisions recreational cannabis being treated very similarly to a bottle of wine.

“It would include producers of all sizes, many of them would be local, which would create jobs in the communities. They would be selling to the central wholesaler at the LDB (Liquor Distribution Branch) and be distributed via the LDB through the public and private stores.”

The BCGEU says their envisioned plans shouldn’t have any impact on the medicinal marijuana system.

The partnership said the network could be ready to sell marijuana by Christmas 2016.
