Mock casualties flooded into the 100 Mile House hospital last Tuesday as the hospital conducted a code orange mass casualty exercise.
A code orange is a mass casualty event, in which the hospital is expecting a large number of patients due to an accident or other emergency.
Students from the Ogden Senior Secondary and members of the 100 Mile House Performing arts society performed the roles of the patients, who, in the scenario were athletes returning by bus from the BC winter games and drove off the road to avoid a moose.
The scenario was made as realistic as possible with paramedics providing initial assessment of the mock casualties before arriving at the hospital.
While emergency situations are unpredictable, training exercises allow hospital staff and physisians to prepare for any possibility.
The exercise was a success and allowed the staff and physicians to work through their procedures and update their code orange plans to prepare for future emergencies.
