MLA Talks About Potential Election Sign Bylaw In Quesnel

Quesnel City Council has directed staff to come up with a political sign bylaw that would limit the number of signs a candidate can have on public property.
It would also have an impact on Provincial elections.
We asked Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes what her thoughts were on the issue.
She says “well I think we’re heading into a provincial election so you’re going to see some different things come forward.  Personally though I think that one of the things that always stood out for me when campaigns were done is that you have to recycle a whole bunch of signs and you see that go into the landfill or if you are able to recycle them, depending on what type of signs you use, I don’t think it’s good for the environment.”
Asked if she was in favour of the bylaw, Oakes says it is clearly the local government’s jurisdiction so she will go with whatever they decide.
She did say however that she was concerned about voter turnout as she says the signs remind everyone that an election is coming and gets conversations happening in communities.
