Autism day important year-round

World Autism Awareness Day came and went on Wednesday but according to one expert, there are aspects of autism to remember year round.

We spoke to Eliane Wanneer-van Osch with the Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre in Hundred Mile and she says, “I think people just have this image of a child sitting in the corner, not being able to speak, so it’s to raise awareness that a lot of these children may not even be diagnosed. The parents don’t know and the teachers don’t know.

Wanneer-van Osch says the most important thing to do is get a screen test done on your child as early as possible if you think they’re displaying symptoms.

The Enrichment Centre offers autism related services to parents with children aged 0-18.

Something going on in the Cariboo you think people should know about?
