The BC Wildfire Service will be conducting a series of prescribed burns starting Monday, March 10 along the Highway 20 corridor.
The Wildfire Service says the burns will be between Hanceville and as far west as Chilanko Forks, depending on whether conditions are suitable and allow for good smoke dispersal.
Wildfire Service cautions smoke may linger in the following days.
Jeromy Corrigan, Information Officer at the Cariboo Fire Centre says “smoke and flames may be visible” from Riske Creek, Tl’esqox, Tsi Del Del, Yunesit’in, T’letinqox, Alexis Creek, and surrounding areas.
“Crews are going to be on-site throughout and managing this prescribed burn,” Corrigan says. “The exact timing of this burn will depend on weather and on-site conditions.”
Wildfire Service says this prescribed burn will be targeting high risk areas to reduce the fuel hazards and to protect infrastructure.
“The goal is to prevent uncontrolled fires along the Highway corridor for the Spring Fire Season,” says Corrigan. “Prescribed burns are a tool to reduce fuel hazards in our region.”
Corrigan assures traffic control will be on-site to ensure the public’s and firefighters’ safety.
