A ‘Social Tea’ To Encourage Meaningful Change for the Future

The Quesnel Women’s Resource Centre will be taking an active approach to celebrating women and discussing change to political ideologies in the community.

The Centre will host an event, Women Leading Change: Being a Leader, Choosing a Leader, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Echen Hall tomorrow [March 8] for International Women’s Day. The ‘social tea’ is being organized by the Seat at the Table Committee from the Resource Centre.

“ It’s an opportunity to celebrate and talk about all the hard work and experiences that we participate in and contribute to,” says Alex Valoroso, an organizer with the Resource Center. “It’s a great way to celebrate women in general.  I think we, as women, tend not to see ourselves as leaders in our communities, but we are in many ways. In our households, schools, and volunteer work. So this is a nice way to acknowledge and reflect on the types of leadership that do occur in these different spaces.”

The event will have two guest speakers in attendance. Nazko Chief Leah Stump will share her journey and her experience in leadership, what that means to her, as well as conceptualize differences in leadership.

Dr. Heather Peters, former professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Northern British Columbia, will speak on political ideologies and ways to consider, look at, and to ask about leadership and accountability.

Valoroso says the topics of the event are timely when looking at the state of the political worlds, and the issues considering gender equality and violence.

She adds the event is a way to look at leadership within communites, and what can be asked from by the people who are voted into power. How can women be engaged and active to bring awarness and represent their needs in their communities.

“We want to have more women involved in the decision-making process, and we’re hoping that events like the International Women’s Day Social Tea can create more awareness around this process.”

The Social Tea is free to attend, and will include beverages, desserts, and some door prizes.

There are still seats available that can be RSVP’d on the Quesnel Women’s Resource Centre’s website or by contacting the Centre through their Facebook page.
