Nazko is giving sweethearts a perfect opportunity for some alone time this weekend.
For the third year, the Nazko Community Association is holding its annual Ice Fishing Derby, which gives avid ice fishers a chance to hook the largest trout hiding in Marmot Lake.
“I was really surprised with the turnout when we started,” says Teresa Sharp, organizer of the Derby. “The first year we had about 100 entries, the second year over 150. We’ve had a lot of interest already for this year. Lots always have wanted to come back, and they’ve always enjoyed the day.”
With the growth of the Derby, Nazko has added more attractions to the site at Marmot Lake. This year, they have ramped up their off-ice amenities with a concession site and bonfire to warm up beside. Sharp says Nazko has also expanded its prize pool this year.
“We have our grand prize, and we always do draw prizes too. We have a special sweethearts couple draw too. Sweetheart can be anyone close to you. Daughter, son, fishing friend, whatever, it doesn’t matter.”
Sharp says the colder weather this year will be beneficial this year for safer ice conditions, allowing more fishers to sit out on the ice compared to the last couple of warmer winters. The fish will also be moving less and eager for food.
Last year, the biggest trout of the day, and the Derby’s history weighed in around four and a half pounds. Sharp is excited for the chance the record will be broken.
The Fishing Derby is being held at Marmot Lake on February 15, and will start around 10 a.m.
