WL Chamber Of Commerce Adds Its Voice And Concerns To Prevent Atlantic Power Closure

The Williams Lake and District Chamber of Commerce is calling for urgent action regarding the potential closure of Atlantic Power.

In a release, the Chamber stated that the closure of this critical facility would have devastating effects on the local economy, workforce, and the broader forestry sector.

Atlantic Power has been a cornerstone of our region’s economic stability, providing well-paying jobs and playing a crucial role in sustainable energy production by utilizing wood waste from the forestry industry. Without a viable agreement or an alternative use for the site, our community will face significant job losses and economic uncertainty at a time when we can least afford it.”

The Chamber is calling on the Province to take immediate action to facilitate a resolution between Atlantic Power and BC Hydro, and if an agreement cannot be reached, they urge the government to explore alternative solutions that would allow the site to continue operating.

Potential options include policy adjustments, energy procurement strategies, or re-purposing the facility for alternative energy production.

The Chamber strongly urges the provincial government to demonstrate leadership in safeguarding jobs and industry in Williams Lake.

The Williams Lake and District Chamber of Commerce stated their members are united in the urgent need for action and welcome the opportunity to discuss this issue and collaborate on solutions that support both economic stability and sustainable energy development.
