Williams Lake City Council approved the third reading of a bylaw and rezoning amendment at Tuesday night’s council meeting.
The amendment allows a property on Lakeview Crescent to be rezoned from a Single-Family Dwelling to a Residential Multi-Family zone in the City’s Official Community Plan.
The development was proposed in May 2024 for a 14-unit housing project, however, the zoning amendment would allow a developer to build up to 70 units in a project.
“We don’t have any housing taking place except for what’s been approved at the [Boitanio] mall,” says Councillor Scott Nelson. “I am eager for development. Nothing would make me happier than to see the facilities for another 60-plus units being built in our community. The number one issue we’ve been encouraging is housing in our community.”
Before the meeting, a public hearing was held for residents to voice their questions and concerns over the property on Lakeview Crescent.
Residents of Tower Crescent, the area behind the proposed development voiced two preliminary concerns on the project.
The first was changes to traffic flow that would be more beneficial to the community and the residents of Tower Crescent.
The second was concerns about privacy of having a tall building that could look over fences into residents’ yards.
The third readings were passed unanimously by the Council.
