It is time to ring the kettles across Williams Lake.
The Salvation Army’s annual Kettle Campaign starts tomorrow, Thursday, November 28, and runs until Christmas Eve.
“Our kick event is at Freshco, from ten am until twelve,” Sarah Jackman, the new Kettles Coordinator at the Salvation Army says. “We have six locations around the city, we’ll be there every afternoon and into the early evening every day except Sundays.”
Jackman has been a long-time volunteer for the Williams Lake Salvation Army, volunteering for their lunch programs, and as a kettler in previous years.
She adds that each year in Williams Lake has been lucrative for the Salvation Army, and believes it will continue to be this year.
“Last year the Kettles Campaign managed to fundraise over $60,000, and we’re hoping to beat that this year,” Jackman says. “Every dollar that gets put in those kettles stays in Williams Lake and supports families here.”
Jackman says that the proceeds go to local family services and food banks, as well as other programs put on by the Salvation Army like their Christmas Hampers.
“This year we registered 670 people for our Christmas Hampers,” Jackman says. “112 were families with children, and 20 per cent of the people who registered for a Christmas Hamper this year are new, and haven’t registered for one before. That’s 136 new families that we’re helping.”
Jackman adds that the Canada Post strike has already affected the campaign, as most companies who donate mail in their donations, and can’t this year.
