As it stands, the NDP will form a majority government in the BC Legislature.
“Based on today’s final vote count, and pending judicial recounts, British Columbians have asked our BC NDP team to lead our province a third time,” said Premier David Eby.
“It is an incredible honour and a huge responsibility. We are listening to the message voters sent with this close election, and will be getting to work on today’s tough challenges right away.”
Pending a judicial recount, the NDP earned the majority by flipping Surrey-Guildford in an incredibly tight race.
The BC Conservatives had led in the riding by 102 votes on election night, but saw their lead diminish to 12 votes yesterday (Sunday), before it flipped to the NDP at noon today.
The NDP won the riding by 27 votes over the Conservatives.
The NDP have 47 seats, while the Conservatives have 44 and the Greens have two, which gives them official party status.
47 seats were needed to form a majority.
The second closest riding was Kelowna Centre, which the Conservatives won by 35 votes.
Every one of our BC NDP MLAs were elected to deliver results for people, like strengthening healthcare and lowering costs. We are determined to listen and get to work on today’s tough challenges — there isn’t a moment to waste. pic.twitter.com/WK9sgxdKyc
