Quesnel City Council wonders what’s going on with the old Junior Secondary School site

Who owns the land where the old Quesnel Junior School used to be ?

City Councillor Scott Elliott raised that question at this week’s meeting.

He was referring to a letter from BC’s Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon.

“It clearly states in this letter that we should contact the Quesnel Board of Education because they’re in control of the land, so I think there is a little bit of confusion there because it could be with the Ministry of Forests too, so I am suggesting that maybe Council puts off a letter to the Board of Education here and the Ministry of Forests to try and get some clarity so we know exactly who’s in control of the lands and we have the possibility of actually moving forward on this in the future.”

Elliott noted that the land, located in the heart of downtown Quesnel, is extremely important to the city in terms of trying to get more housing and possibly other initiatives there.

The old school was demolished back in May of 2020 and has since been returned to green space.

A new junior school was built on Mountain Ash Road in the Red Bluff area and it opened in September of 2022.
