The Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) is hosting a week long event going over various issues local governments are facing.
Around 200 resolutions will be presented throughout the week, which starts today, with some having some being of interest and affect on the Cariboo region.
Past UBCM President and Quesnel City Councillor, Laurey-Anne Roodenburg says one resolution is the unsustainable local government contributions to Regional Hospital Districts.
“One of the things that happens is every time we have a capital project come up, we are expected to voluntarily contribute 40 percent to the project.” says Roodenburg.
“As these projects become more and more expensive, the regional hospital district boards have to look at upping the per $100,000 rate for our residents to be able to afford the capital projects our hospitals need.”
Roodenburg says UBCM will be asking the province to look at a framework that has a better cost sharing model that’s sustainable for all hospital boards.
She added throughout the week, there will be various sessions including what’s next for housing, communities in transition, and changing climate rising costs.
The event is being held in Vancouver at the Convention Centre, going from today (September 16th) until Friday at noon.
