Williams Lake residents were invited to Boitanio Park to take part in this year’s International Overdose Awareness Day event.
The event is to educate people on the toxic drug supply, reduce stigma, raise awareness, and honour and remember those lost to the toxic drug supply.
Peer Coordinator and Occupational Therapist, Sarah De Meda highlights the importance of education around this topic.
“I think it’s so important for our community to be aware of the toxic drug crisis and what’s been going on in our community, and also the resources and supports that are available not just from Interior Health, but through all of our community organizations.” says De Meda.
“Our hope is that an event like this, with the information, will help reduce stigma involved with substance use and reaching out for help.”
De Meda says the impacts surrounding this issue go beyond just the person using, but affects friends, family, and the community as a whole.
She added the message to take away from this event is “together we can” which highlights the importance of the community.
Quesnel also hosted an International Overdose Awareness Day event at Lhtako Dene Park, and was organized by the Coalition of Substance Users of the North.
