Barkerville/Bowron area residents get green light to return home

The Evacuation Orders for the Barkerville area and the Bowron area has been downgraded to alerts.

That decision was made this hour (12:00 p.m.) by the Cariboo Regional District Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).

An evacuation order was issued back on July 21st at 3:30 p.m. for the Barkerville area and later in the day at 4:45 for the Bowron area due to the Antler Creek Wildfire.

Wells residents, who were also impacted by this fire, were told that they could go home last (Thursday) night.

More information about re-entering the area can be found in the Guide to Re-Entry After an Evacuation.

Residents are advised to watch for livestock and wildfire on roads.

Wildfires are still active and firefighting activities continue in the area and residents are asked to stay out of those areas.

The CRD suggests that people also prepare emotionally for their return as their neighbourhood and community may not look the same as it was prior to their evacuation.

Residents should also be aware that there may be danger trees in wildfire affected areas.

It is also important to note that air quality may remain poor as a result of smoke from nearby fire activity.

Those with respiratory issues, small children, and the elderly should consider this before they chose to return to the area.

Since these areas remain on Evacuation Alert, residents should be prepared to leave again on short notice should the need arise.
