100 Mile Fire Rescue responded to a fire at the West Fraser Mill site over the weekend.
Fire Chief Dave Bissat said they were called out Saturday morning at 5:30 for a fire that was burning inside a dust silo.
“We arrived with three apparatus to begin with and were on site until Sunday evening at 9:30 when we left the mill. We had to rotate out apparatus and man power and during the height of the operation we had assistance from 108 Mile Volunteer Fire Department and Lone Butte Volunteer Fire Department just for extra man power and water support.”
Bissat said the Mill employees are looking into the cause of the fire and that it is pretty hard to determine that at this point in time.
“We had to keep the silo cool while protecting the other infrastructure around it. The silo contains chips from the plant that they use to heat the plant, it’s a fine dust mixed with chips and is a very dangerous substance when it does become heated and on fire. The biggest thing was keeping the silo cool so it didn’t collapse and cause any further damage,” Bissat noted.
BC Ambulance Service was also on site over the weekend in case there were any injuries which Bissat said luckily there were none.
