Premier mulling over seatbelts on school buses after crash in the Cariboo

Premier David Eby says he’s willing to consider the idea of compulsory seatbelts in school buses, following an accident Friday that injured an estimated 30 people.

The bus ran off the road near 100 Mile House.

Currently, federal law doesn’t require seatbelts in school buses, federal officials saying they can negatively affect safety if they’re not properly installed or used.

The decision is left up to local authorities.

Eby says the province will explore the issue further, and if safety can be improved, they’ll consider new regulations.
