A traditional Summertime event that gets Williams Lake youth all revved up will happen later this (Thursday) evening.
The annual Soapbox Derby will be getting underway at 6 pm at Cariboo GM on Mackenzie Avenue South and will be emceed by MLA Lorne Doerkson.
Not only do young boys and girls take part in this fundraiser for the Williams Lake Boys and Girls Club, members from the Lake City’s First Responders join in as well.
Deborah Bortolussi with Central Cariboo Search and Rescue said last year they had the honour of racing against the Williams Lake RCMP and looking forward to taking them on once again after last year’s result.
“We had our driver, our soapbox, our pit crew, ready to go, but we had a call come in East of Williams Lake. We were left behind with a sub driver and a skeleton crew so the rest of our members could attend to that call out. We still pulled it together in the end and accepted a gracious loss to RCMP.”
Bortolussi said Search and Rescue has done their best to attend every one of these Soapbox Derby’s.
“We think it’s for a great cause and we love to see the whole community come together, the smiles on the kids faces when they do their own soapbox races and the joy of our team building our own soapbox car. We haven’t always raced in it but we have attended providing safety and support and we hope to see a big crowd come out tonight.”
Sign up for the annual Soapbox Derby hosted by the Hooligans is at 5 at Cariboo GM with racing starting at 6.
A barbecue by donation will also be available with all proceeds going to the Williams Lake Boys and Girls Club.
