Barlow Creek residents pick longer term to pay for new fire tender

Barlow Creek residents have had their say on how they want to pay for a new fire tender for their local fire department.

A referendum was held on Saturday (April 27) and 102 ballots were cast on that day, and in two advance pools, with 75 in favour of borrowing the money over a 10-year period.

27 preferred the option of paying for it over 5 years.

John Massier, the Cariboo Regional District Director for Area C, said “there are only positive outcomes from this referendum when the results either way result in a modern purpose-built fire tender that will serve the needs of the community for decades.”

The result mans that the Cariboo Regional District can proceed to borrow up to 650 thousand dollars over a 10-year term.

It will increase the residential tax rate for this service from $71.70 per $100,000 of assessment up to $108.86 per $100,000.

The change will take effect in 2025.

After that, it will no longer meet the fire protection standards set by the Fire Underwriters Survey, which informs the costs and discounts of home insurance for being in a fire protection area.
