Central Cariboo Search and Rescue sees average winter with different concerns

While the winter season wasn’t so normal, Central Cariboo Search and Rescue (CCSAR) didn’t see a real deviation in calls.

Preparations going into the winter season for CCSAR was different that usual, as avalanche and flat ice rescue was the main focus.

Member and Public Relations Coordinator, Debra Bortolussi says there weren’t many callouts related to winter.

“The concern for thin ice was high and our avalanche risk was very high this year. We didn’t do much in that realm.” says Bortolussi.

“Further to that, this year was different as we had more ATV and UTV callouts, and less snowmobile callouts.”

Bortolussi added that less people were adventuring in the backcountry, as opportunities weren’t there due to poor snowfall.

She says it could be attributed to people taking the avalanche warnings seriously an taking more precautions, which they like to see.

The team did continue practicing their flat ice rescue on Saturday, keeping the skills prepared as ice continues to melt.

Going into spring, Bortolussi says anyone heading outdoors should remember the three T’s, which is trip plan, train, and take the essentials.
