Province Acquires Land Within 5 Provincial Parks, 2 In And Around Our Region

Wells Gray Park near Clearwater and East of Williams Lake, along with Bowron Lake Park near Quesnel, will look a little different to visitors.

Yesterday (November 7) the province acquired  a total of 109 hectares of land valued at $1.9 million to be added to these and three other provincial parks to enhance protection of BC’s biodiversity.

That includes just over 33 hectares purchased within Gray Wells Park that contains wetlands, advanced second-growth forest and habitat for black bears, moose, deer, birds and small mammals, as well as three hectares on a forested hillside above Bowron Lake contributing to the diversity of the park’s landscape.

Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, George Heyman, says acquiring these lands enhances protection of important ecosystems and wildlife habitat, and improves access to outdoor recreation experiences.

Through the acquisitions of private land and partnerships with conservation groups, individual donors, BC Parks Foundation and supporters, the province regularly adds land to the parks and protected areas system.

British Columbia has 1,039 provincial parks, recreation areas, conservancies, ecological reserves and protected areas covering more than 14 million hectares or approximately 14.4% of the land base.
