$24.3 Million project announced at Williams Lake City Hall

The City of Williams Lake along with the Provincial and Federal government announced the new water treatment plant for the community.

The $24.3 million project will provide the community access to safe and healthier drinking water by reducing the manganese levels.

“At the end of the day, our responsibility as a government is to look after Canadians, whether you look at the Federal government, Provincial or Municipal.” says Minister of Emergency Preparedness, Harjit S. Sajjan.

“It’s easy to talk about about things that’s seen, but when it comes to water treatment plants, sewage systems, pipes underground, it’s not something you talk about much, but it’s extremely important.”

Sajjan added that it’s important to have infrastructure like this, especially when it comes to the growth of the community.

The Federal government is providing the City $9,726,750 in the project, with the Provincial government investing $8,104,814.

The City will cover the remaining costs of $6,485,311.

“What our province’s roll and responsibilities here is to make sure that as our communities continue to grow, they have the support to meet the higher level government standard in meeting that, and we are totally in support of communities growing and very happy to be able to work with Williams Lake.” says B.C Minister of Municipal Affairs, Anne Kang.

Mayor Surinderpal Rathor spoke on the timeline of the project, saying that work has already begun, and should take two to three years to complete.
