Weather Continues To Be An Allie For Crews In The Quesnel Fire Zone

Rain and cooler temperatures have combined to work in the favour of BC Wildfire Service personnel in the Quesnel Fire Zone.

Fire Information Officer Troy Gersback said machine guards have successfully been established by firefighters in the northeast and southeast sections of the Teepee Lake fire in the Nazko region.

“That is those areas where it was quite active last weekend so it’s great that we have them in place. Our Brazilian contingent that have joined us are back out in thew field and as a result of the huge resource that we’re able to put on that fire, it’s about 160 firefighting personnel out there today (July 26) we’re able to move through our operational strategies and tactics at a great pace. We are looking in a very good position with the Teepee Lake.”

Gersback said heavy equipment was successful in establishing guards in areas of the Pelican Lake fire 6 kilometres east of Titetown, that were previously active.

“There is just one final section along the southwestern extent of that fire that is inaccessible by road and to heavy equipment. We’ve got a strategy in place there that we’ll be moving firefighters in and out out of that area using helicopters over the coming days to mop up any hot spots but all the other guards around the Pelican Lake fire are holding strong and continue to be monitored by firefighters and helicopters,” Gersback said.

The Incident Management Team at both the Townsend Creek and Branch Road wildfires remain confident with the strategy and resources assigned, there will be no further increase to the fire perimeter.
