Garbage bin campaign taking place in Williams Lake

Williams Lake will be a part of a garbage bin campaign to prevent human-wildlife conflicts.

This is in partnership between the Cariboo Regional District and City of Williams Lake with WildsafeBC, to promote putting garbage bins out the morning of pickup, rather than the night before.

Garbage is said to be the number one attractant for black bears.

“Once black bears identify the attractant and they find the attractant, they definitely come back and that becomes very problematic, and often times results in them dying or being shot.” says Laylah Fariad, WildsafeBC Cariboo Coordinator.

“So, we really want to try and prevent that.”

On July 25th, WildSafeBC will visit multiple neighbourhoods and place bright yellow stickers on bins out the night before, to warn residents that their bin is an attractant to wildlife.

More information on the program can be found on WildSafeBC’s website here.
