New Wildfire Discovered Wednesday Afternoon In Quesnel Fire Zone

A new wildfire 2 hectares in size, north of the Townsend Creek fire in the Quesnel Zone was discovered late yesterday (July 19) afternoon.

“You would have seen a lot of air support on that fire last night.” Madison Dahl, Fire Information Officer, said, “Air tankers were able to blanket that with retardant and we did have helicopters actioning that fire as well. We do have an initial attack crew in there today and we are fortunate that it is surrounded by some very damp natural features.”

Other fires burning in the Quesnel Fire Zone, Dahl said they have control lines around the entire perimeter of the Townsend Creek fire and ground crews have completed mop up on 70 percent of it.

The Teepee Lake fire in the Nako region is being actioned in 3 different sections.

Dahl said the northern part is smouldering throughout showing normal fire behaviour.

“On the south side that is our priority. We definitely do have air support, we have utilized planned ignitions and utilized some of the old burns to help slow the rate of spread of that wildfire. In the more eastern part of the fire, again we are utilizing some of the old burns to help slow the rate of spread of the fire. We have some natural and machine guards in place and we are prioritizing any structure protection where we need to but we do have crews in both those areas.”

The southeastern section of the Pelican Lake fire,6 kilometres east of Titetown, is the most active section near the Batnuni Road and Dahl noted that they are focusing on building a guard there.

And perimeter control lines are around the entirety of the Branch Road fire west of Quesnel.
