Community members and dignitaries were at the Williams Lake Curling Centre today (June 29) to watch Rick Hansen officially cut the ribbon to open the new accessibility elevator.
In his speech Hansen said for all these years he has been so proud of the City and all its residents to continue to set goals and remove barriers.
“I’m so excited to be here to celebrate successes and to congratulate the Curling Club for all the leadership and being able to respond to the challenge of just one person who started something that took a baby step. Just a baby step, not finishing it all off, and that catalyzed energy, and excitement, and more resources and more volunteers. And here you are now 3 years later achieving another goal and dream proving that anything is possible once you have the courage to try. So I am super honoured to be here to celebrate this significant milestone on the continuing journey here in Williams Lake, with me, with everyone else, to make this City the best, the most accessible City in the Country, and one of the best in the world to live and as a model for the future.”
Work on the accessible elevator at the Williams Lake Curling Centre began in 2019 and the project was completed in the Spring of 2022.
