Quesnel’s food bank is on the move

The Community food bank in Quesnel is moving from the downtown core on McLean Street to West Quesnel.

Jennifer Reid, Community Food Coordinator with the Canadian Mental Health Association’s Northern BC Division, confirms that they will be taking over that service from the Salvation Army.

“We are officially opening the food bank on Tuesday, June 27th.  Nourish Food Bank is located at 101 Marsh Drive.  We are right across from Dominos in the same building as Sprout Kitchen.”

Reid says they are officially opening tomorrow (Tuesday) and client intakes and registration for monthly hampers will start on that day.

“The process for the client registration and access to monthly hampers will look very similar to Salvation Army’s model, but because we are in the set-up phase we’ll be making adjustments to that process as needed as time goes on.”

Reid says people can access a monthly hamper by calling the Nourish Food Bank at 250-991-0481.

She says they will be posting their hours of service and operation on their Facebook page.

Reid says based on previous numbers, they anticipate about 120 households to access the program each month, although she acknowledges that that may change as the need for access to food is growing in the community.

She says they will also be starting up a hot meal program.

“Starting on Tuesday, July 4th the hot meal program will be served at the door at the previous Jean’s Side Door catering building located at 383 North Fraser Drive in West Quesnel, and it will operate Tuesday to Thursday from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.”

The Salvation Army will continue to operate that service this week.
