BC Hydro will be removing 88 thousand smart meters by 2019.
Spokesperson, Mora Scott says the move was made for a couple of reasons.
“We are anticipating 10,000 smart meters will be replaced over the next four years for things like broken screen software upgrades or exterior damage while the other 48,000 are entering Measurement Canada’s routine testing.”
She adds the new meters will allow crews to respond faster to a major weather event.
“The new metering system allows BC Hydro to restore power faster after storm events, we can check the meters in areas where power has been restored so crews can move to the next outage sooner.”
It is not clear on how many will be replaced in Northern BC.
The total cost of the project is 20 million dollars and will also include the replacement of 8200 analog meters and the addition of 5000 new ones to rural areas that have poor wireless connections.
