Quesnel City Council has announced another round of staff and service cuts.
A press release issued Thursday afternoon indicates that the city will restructure administrative staff at the RCMP detachment, a move that will be done through attrition, as well as cut the hours of operation at the Quesnel and District Museum to seasonal rather than year-round.
The city will also renegotiate the contract for the Quesnel and District Visitors Center, reduce garbage pick-up to once every two weeks as opposed to one and reduce operating hours at the landfill as it will now be closed on Mondays and statutory holidays with the exception of Boxing Day.
The changes to garbage pick-up and at the landfill will go into effect the week of November 16th.
Mayor Bob Simpson is quoted in the press release as saying that the moves are being made to help achieve a target of 525 thousand dollars in cost reductions for the 2016 budget.
He says this is in addition to the staff changes announced at City Hall earlier this year.
Simpson says the changes announced today are designed “to ensure that Quesnel remains a vibrant and resilient community through this transition period.”
What the press release doesn’t say is if there will be any layoffs as a result of these cuts.
