Former Quesnel Mayor To Run For CRD

Former Quesnel Mayor Mary Sjostrom is hoping to get back into local politics, this time as a representative with the Cariboo Regional District.

Sjostrom has announced her intention to run in Area A.

Ted Armstrong is leaving that position after 40 years.

In addition to being Mayor from 2008 to 2014,during which time she represented the City on the CRD Board, Sjostrom also spent 9 years as a Councillor.

Here she talks about what she sees as the differences between representing the City and the CRD…

“I think it is considerably different representing the region but i also know that i have sat as Director Armstrong’s alternate and I’ve lived for as many years in Area A as i have in the city and i just see it as continuing to serve, probably in somewhat of a different way, and i just look forward to being able to represent the people if i’m successful in Area A.”

Sjostrom has been out of politics for four years now, but she says she has continued to be busy…

“I have been extremely busy working working on the Board of Governors on the College and i was on the passenger transportation board for a while and I’ve been involved for the last two to three years with the Quesnel Community Foundation, so it wasn’t something that i thought i would get into immediately, but when the opportunity came up and Director Armstrong said he thought it would be a good idea and when he decided to retire, i started thinking more and more about it. I’ve had the opportunity to work behind the scenes with the folks from Alexandria that are attempting to get their society status back and it just sparks a real interest that i really enjoy working with people and helping out people, so that just confirms to me that i would really like to stay involved.”

One thing that Sjostrom would like to see improved is communication, particularly during incident’s like last year’s wildfires.
