The Conservation Officer Service says that if you see a live animal in a trap they want to know about it.
“Especially this time of year with the heat that we’re experiencing, we don’t want animals to be left in the traps too long and be in distress more than need be,” says Sgt. Jeff Tyre.
“We’d love to get reports on those sort of incidents, but just be aware that it’s not always an offence as there is lawful trapping going on 365 days a year.”
COS removed a badger from a lawful wolf trap Monday west of Williams Lake after having been reported by a gentleman who was doing some mitigation from wolves doing degradation on cattle.
“They’re a very feisty animal,” says Tyre of the female badger that was caught in the trap by its right front foot and was tranquilized before being released.
“As far as we could tell there were no broken bones, the skin wasn’t broken so we just left her in a nice shaded cool spot to sleep it off. They’re such a tough animal, we’re confident she’ll be fine after this.”
