As 188 wildfires continue to burn across BC, more than 16,000 people have been evacuated.
The Ministry of Emergency Management (EMBC) is now encouraging all residents to take extra precaution for future possible disasters.
EMBC Assistant Deputy Minister Robert Turner believes everyone should be prepared.
“It’s not only for those currently in affected areas of wildfire, or even areas that may potentially be affected by wildfires, every person in British Columbia should be prepared at all times for the eventuality of some kind of disaster or emergency.”

Turner also suggests visiting the BC Wildfire Service website, where a link can be found for Prepared BC, teaching them how to react in a similar disaster scenario.
“I’ve used this material myself when preparing my family. It helps you identify things you might not think about putting in your emergency kit, like making sure that you have emergency phone numbers so that every member your family knows who they should contact, or where they should go in the case that you get separated.”
He says the site is helpful for those with mobility issues and pets, or for anyone who owns a home, condo, or small business.
More than 9,000 people have been registered through the Red Cross BC fires Appeal campaign, and the portal to register has been fixed with no waiting time.
