Based on a low number of salmon a September tradition in Horsefly won’t be taking place.
The Horsefly Salmon Festival has been an annual event since 2001, but according to the Chair of the Horsefly River Roundtable, Maureen Lebourdais, the indicator as to why it had to be cancelled this year could be traced back to 2009.
“The big species wide crash, I guess we could call it, in 2009 where so many salmon runs collapsed and the fish just didn’t return, that should have been the dominant year for Horsefly 2009 and so four years later which would have been last year hardly any fish came back either”.
Lebourdais said the decision to cancel the festival was disappointing.
