Bob Bray is a member of the party’s communications committee. He says application for the party leadership is officially open.
“It is open and it’ll be open for the next few months. There has been some informal expression of interest. Now that we’ve launched the formal process, we’ll see if that person comes forward. But there has not yet been a lot of interest and no official candidates as yet.”
The party announced yesterday that it will hold its leadership convention in Prince George this year. Bray says that’s a first for the party.
“This is the first time we’ve had a party meeting that far out of the lower mainland. We’re a little stronger up in the northern part of the province, the north east part. So we wanted to get up there where we have some electoral prospects.”
The party’s former leader, Dan Brooks, announced his resignation in January.
The convention will take place on September 16 and 17 at the Ramada Prince George. Bray says most voting is done by mail in ballot and votes will be accepted until 9AM on September 17.
“The counting sometimes takes 3-4 hours. While that is going on we’ll be having our annual general meeting where we elect our board for the coming year. Hopefully, after lunch, we’ll be able to announce who is our new leader.”
Bray says counting up the votes is a major undertaking.
“It’s a complicated process, the counting, because we end up having 85 ballot boxes that we have to count and get a total for each electoral district.”
