Exploratory Excavation For The New Williams Lake Water Treatment Plant Set To Start

The City of Williams Lake will begin it’s exploratory excavation work at Scout Island starting today (Monday).

Senior Engineer Technologist Jeff Bernardy said it’s part of the planning and preparation for the water treatment plant.

“One of the first tasks that we’ll have to do is undertake some archaeology investigation which will involve doing some excavation on the causeway and the parking lot and also kind of in the picnic area on Scout Island near where the new water treatment plant will be.”

Bernardy said the work will take place from April 7 to May 2 and workers will be on site during the week between the hours of 7 am and 5 pm.

“During construction activities there definitely will be the potential for some impacts for vehicles, some delays,” Bernardy said, “the intent is to keep single lane traffic moving at all times to make sure that there is access the Nature House and the buildings there, but pedestrians and vehicles should definitely be aware of the equipment, the excavation, and keep a safe distance.”

We asked Bernardy what the next steps of the project will be once this work is completed.

“This will all factor into the design and planning for the water treatment plant. This may dictate exactly any conditions or where the plant can go and the associated pipping with it and it will feed into the design which is currently underway which we hope to have wrapped up and move into tender as soon as possible.”

The City of Williams Lake asks residents and visitors to respect all signage and traffic control personnel and use caution when travelling through the work zone.
