A location for a new skateboard park was discussed at the last District of 100 Mile House Council Meeting (March 25).
Mayor Maureen Pinkney said there is a new 100 Mile Youth Initiative that would like to see a proper concrete skate park in our community.
“And we agree. They went through the process of doing a couple of survey’s with both their members and the general public to where they thought the best idea would be for it to be placed. One of their suggestions was our Centennial Park and the District of 100 Mile, our maintenance, our Councillors, the Cariboo Regional District Directors, we all tend to agree that the park is probably the nicest place to be so we’ll start reaching out to the public and getting some further input on that and then the skate board park group will have to do some fundraising.”
Pinkney said she not sure how much fundraising this group has done.
“They have definitely been very organized getting in touch with some contractors that do this for a living and do it in many communities. They brought a few of their ideas to the table on what they would like to see. We, ourselves, and the District of 100 Mile, have not set aside any funding for this so like most of these initiatives they’ll have to raise some money themselves first. Once they get to a certain point we’ll have another look at it and see where we go from there. Sort of the first thing is identify where it’s going to be and then they can start fundraising,” Pinkney added.
She said the District has a duty to the people who are right on the boundary of the park to reach out to them and see what their concerns are.
“There’s already a basketball and tennis court there so the addition of as skateboard park should not be a problem but you don’t know until you reach out and talk to the residents. So that’s our next step as far as the District of 100 Mile goes is to make sure that everyone knows what’s going on and we’re not surprising anybody with a pop-up skateboard park,” Pinkney said.
