There was a major explosion and fire at the West Pine MDF Plant in Quesnel tonight. (Mar 9)
Quesnel Fire Chief Sylvain Gauthier says they were called out at around 5-30.
He says the fire is now out and they have two crews inside the mill going through it systematically to make sure there are no hot spots.
Gauthier says everyone is accounted for and there were no injuries.
He says the cause of the blast is unknown at this point.
Gauthier says when they arrived on scene “they could see heavy smoke and flames from outside, mainly where some of the silos are and some of the conveyors.”
He says there were also “pipes laying around that had been blown away.”
Gauthier says he doesn’t believe any chemicals were involved in the fire.
Mutual aid has been called in from other fire departments in the area…Barlow Creek, West Fraser and Kersley…in case there are any other fire emergencies in the city.
