Building A Better Tomorrow For Williams Lake Retirees While Helping The Community

An Organization that started 40-years ago in Australia for retired men to communicate with each other while remaining active has now grown to 1800 in 17 countries, including two in the Cariboo: 100 Mile House and Williams Lake.

The Lake City’s Mens Shed began last year in 2024 and now has approximately 20 members that get together to work on projects, teach each other new skills and create lasting friendships.

Treasurer Neil Bridson said the Mens Shed is mainly for the mental health of the members so whatever makes them happy, they should do.

“What tends to make retired men happy are DIY projects, making things with their hands still showing that they still have the skills and the ability to do stuff. But it’s mainly to keep the members happy and what makes them happy is helping out the community.”

The Williams Lake Mens Shed has repaired raised garden beds at the Community Garden, replaced a panel on a medical bed, and replaced an antique chair, stool and ottoman for a resident.

President Mike Desaultels said their group started by having meetings at a local coffee shop and it’s now graduated to a shed, a two car garage, where they work together on small projects.

“Coming in the door, having a coffee and chatting with the guys has improved my attitude for that day immensely. When you get everybody together, we’ve all been through the old guy stuff, the hardest part is getting all the old guys to share because at 70 years of age we’re not normally share type people, we’re more work type people. The Mens Shed helps them get some of the weight off their shoulders and keeps them active,” Desaultels said.

Mens Shed member Bert Groenenberg who retired two years ago said this has given him another thing to keep him busy and active.

“Also trying to get innovative, what kind of things can we build together. We’ve repaired 3 or 4 pieces of different furniture and now we’re looking at actually building something so we’ll see where that goes.”

Any retiree who would like to become a member of the Williams Lake Mens Shed can contact Bert (250) 398-0184, Mike (250) 267-6477, or Neil (250) 855-4007.

More members are always welcome to join when they meet Tuesday’s from 9 am to noon.
