“Expect dangerous avalanche conditions right through the weekend,” says Paul Kehler, Field Technician for Avalanche Canada.
With more snow and bitterly cold temperatures on their way, Kehler warns that the regions north of Prince George, all the way through the Cariboo and Central B.C are in considerable danger zones.
“We have a high avalanche danger forecasted for the Alpine. A significant amount of new snow is falling on an unstable layer that is sort of like dominoes stacked up. Push one over, and it can trigger a widespread failure. You can expect very unstable conditions at this time.”
Kehler advises it would be best for hikers to remain in the lower elevations, and don’t risk high Alpine hiking. Warning that in these conditions, an avalanche could be triggered even from a distance.
If adventurers are to go out, Kehler recommends staying in low-angled terrain, staying in heavily forested terrains, and carrying a transceiver probe and a shovel, which is “the minimum safety gear Avalanche Canada recommends to carry.”
