6 recipients of the 2024 British Columbia Reconciliation Award included one from Williams Lake.
Phyllis Webstad, founding member of the Orange Shirt Society, was honoured yesterday (Thursday) during a ceremony at Government House.
Webstad’s activism began in 2013 when she shared her own residential school experience which inspired the creation of Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The British Columbia Reconciliation Award recognizes extraordinary individuals and organizations who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, integrity, respect, and commitment to furthering reconciliation with Indigenous peoples in the province or inspired others to continue reconciliation efforts.
Speakers at the event included Lt. Gov. Janet Austin, Premier David Eby, and Phyllis Webstad.
