Be Safe This Holiday Season & Every Day In The Cariboo Back Country

Tis the season to be enjoying all the great outdoor activities the Cariboo has to offer.

With that in mind, your Search and Rescue Teams want to you to do that with family and friends safely.

Central Cariboo Search and Rescue Media Relations and Member, Deborah Bortolussi reminds you that these colder and warm temperatures can create a lot of dangerous situations when in the back country.

“If you’re getting out on the ice to be prepared, to do your ice test yourself, don’t trust what a friend has said. Know the conditions, know what’s safe, especially with these weather conditions what that can do to the ice and how deceiving that can be. If you’re heading out to the back 40 to go for a hike, ensure that you take the right things with you and that you are prepared for any emergencies.”

Bortolussi noted that if you are going out there trying to find some snow, make sure you check Avalanche Canada before you go knowing what the conditions.

“People love to think that it will never happen to them but a lot of our call outs are from very talented and very experienced people who have been caught in very unprecedented situations. Tell a responsible person where you are going, when to expect you back, what you are going to be wearing and what you expect to be doing.”

She also said to find out what kind of a sled they’ll be using.

“Even if they don’t know what kind of sled it is or what that means, tell them because if you do find yourself needing Search and Rescue we know what that means. We know what a mountain sled versus a trail sled can do. We understand where a UTV can get you versus an ATV. Be sure to share information like that. If you do find yourself needing us we can get to you.”
