The Canadian Union of Postal Workers, including 88 members here in the Cariboo, are on strike !
Echo Law, the President of Local 8-1-6 in Quesnel, confirms that they walked off the job at midnight eastern last (Thursday) night.
“Negotiation haven’t gone well and unfortunately the corporation relies on this tactic in hopes for back to work legislation and binding arbitration.”
Law says workers are frustrated.
“Frustrated that there’s never true collective bargaining, that they use the tools against us that the government provides in the back to work legislation.”
Law says they are still pretty far apart on some key issues.
“Health and safety is a big one. Wages to go with the cost of living right now, and there is an attack on our pension as well, trying to change the structure of the pension and some benefits as well.”
Canada Post says mail deliveries are on hold, and no new mail is being accepted.
There are 45 unionized postal employees in Quesnel, 34 in Williams Lake and 9 in 100 Mile House.
